DraftKings World Series Game 1 Showdown: Picks, advice for Astros vs. Nationals MLB DFS

Written By Billy Heyen

World Series Game 1 between the Astros and Nationals gets underway with an 8:08 p.m. ET first pitch on Tuesday night. The Nationals have had a longer layoff, but both teams' pitching rotations line up exactly as they would've wanted. That creates a fun opportunity in making our DraftKings Showdown lineup for single-game DFS action. Gerrit Cole and Max Scherzer both could pitch the heavy majority on Tuesday night, and we found a way to get both into our DraftKings lineup.

Playing both starting pitchers forces us to avoid the highest priced hitters from both teams, but that's not the end of the world. All four of Michael Brantley, Carlos Correa, Yuli Gurriel and Adam Eaton have been some of the game's better hitters at various points of their careers. Gurriel and Correa both hit in the bottom half of Houston's order, but that's fine -- it will still work as a mini stack. Brantley got the captain edge due to his career numbers against Scherzer.

DraftKings Showdown World Series Picks: Astros vs. Nationals

CAPTAIN (1.5x points, 1.5x price): OF Michael Brantley, Astros ($8,400)

It shouldn't be shocking that a pure hitter like Brantley would have solid career numbers even against Scherzer. He's 15-for-44 against him with 10 extra base hits, as good as any Houston hitter against Mad Max. That's a good start to any lineup, and he hits in the heart of the Astros' order.

FLEX: P Gerrit Cole, Astros ($12,000)

Cole is currently the best pitcher in baseball. Prior to his last start, he had struck out double-digit batters in 11-straight games. In an "off day," Cole struck out seven. He's as automatic a bet for DK points as you can get, and he's worth every penny of his price.

FLEX: P Max Scherzer, Nationals ($11,400)

At first, I didn't plan on playing Scherzer -- it feels odd to play three hitters against the pitcher I consider second best in the game. But because of how quickly pitcher points pile up with innings pitched and strikeouts, he feels too good of a play to avoid. Since I was able to fill in with three cheaper hitters, Scherzer should pay off, too.

FLEX: SS Carlos Correa, Astros ($6,800)

If Correa was on almost any other team, he'd be the face of that franchise. He's been hampered by some injuries and ineffectiveness, but when he's healthy, as he is now, he's liable to crush baseballs every time he swings. This is a bargain.

FLEX: 1B Yuli Gurriel, Astros ($6,000)

Gurriel rarely strikes out, which makes him an interesting matchup against Scherzer. But we'll take the shot at him returning value by putting the ball in play a few times and maybe finding the Crawford Boxes like he did in the ALCS.

FLEX: OF Adam Eaton, Nationals ($5,400)

The Nats often use Eaton to do the little things in their lineup, bunting or moving runners over. But he's a good contact hitter who might be able to withstand Cole's dominance and knock a few singles while potentially stealing a bag. And he hits near the top of the order, which always helps getting one more at-bat late.
