Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Week 13: Baker Mayfield, Lamar Jackson among worthwhile free agent pickups for fantasy playoffs

After a couple weeks of lackluster free agent adds and good games from players unworthy of waiver claims, the past two weeks have seen several important injuries (Melvin Gordon, Marlon Mack, Kerryon Johnson, Joe Flacco) and even more notable breakouts (Gus Edwards, Lamar Jackson, Baker Mayfield, Josh Adams). This week we add a suspension (Leonard Fournette) and several more potential starting RBs, at least for one week (Carlos Hyde, Austin Ekeler/Justin Jackson, Nyheim Hines, LeGarrette Blount). All the aforementioned RBs will be among the top Week 13 fantasy waiver wire pickups, and several more sleepers with favorable fantasy playoff schedules will be on the free agent radar after waivers clear around 4-5 a.m. ET on Wednesday in ESPN and Yahoo leagues.

Perhaps just as important q43 all the potential TE and D/ST streamers on our full free agent list. It's all about winning this week for a bunch of teams, so swing for the fences with high-upside plays instead of playing your "usual defense" in a brutal matchup (and there are several examples of those this week). You can find plenty of good streamers at both key positions, and there's even a QB and a bunch of potential WR3s (particularly in PPR leagues). If you're worried about your kicker in the massive blizzard expected to affect over half of this week's games, check out our Week 13 kicker rankings. (Note: We made up the blizzard thing to get more clicks on our kicker rankings because no one reads those, which is a real bummer because we work hard on them.)

It's almost a lock that in most leagues, LeGarrette BlountCarlos HydeNyheim Hines, and Justin Jackson will be the top four waiver claims. (Josh Adams and Austin Ekeler will be the top two claims in leagues where they're available). They're worth it, and you can make a case for any of them as the No. 1 claim, depending on your team's needs. After that, it's possible there won't be any claims, as there really aren't any WRs worth one (unless Josh Reynolds is still available in your league). Lamar Jackson might get one, though most fantasy owners shouldn't need to use a waiver claim on a quarterback at this point in the season. Still, he and Baker Mayfield are worth free agent moves (see below).

Unless otherwise noted, only players owned in fewer than 50 percent of Yahoo leagues considered.

Baker Mayfield, QB, Browns. Over the past five games, Mayfield is averaging 233.5 passing yards per game while posting 13 TDs and only two turnovers. He's also only taken three sacks the past two games compared to 15 in the three previous contests. The Browns don't actually have a favorable schedule over the next three weeks (@ HOU, vs. CAR, @ DEN), but Mayfield's Week 16 date with Cincinnati could help some owners win a fantasy title. If you're planning ahead that far, grab Mayfield now and put him on your bench.

Lamar Jackson, QB, Ravens. Can Jackson cut it as a real-life QB against a legt defense? That remains to be seen -- and it won't be seen until Week 16. The parade of favorable matchups continues for Jackson, as Baltimore is set to face the Falcons, Chiefs and Buccaneers in Weeks 13-15. It's unclear what will happen once Joe Flacco (hip) is cleared to play, but it doesn't hurt to grab Jackson and his high rushing floor right now.

WEEK 13 PPR RANKINGS: Running back | Wide receiverTight end

Nyheim Hines, RB, Colts. Marlon Mack (concussion) might be out next week against the Jaguars, and Hines would likely function as the Colts' lead back. It's possible he would split with Jordan Wilkins, but last time we saw the Colts backfield in a pre-Mack situation, Hines had 22 touches, including 15 carries. Either way, he's an intriguing play in PPR leagues if Mack is out.

Bruce Ellington, WR, Lions. Ellington is definitely not worth a waiver claim, but since we've already written about Blount, Hyde, and Jackson, we'll give a little love to a WR. Marvin Jones (knee) has been placed on season-ending IR, and Ellington has already settled into the No. 2 receiver role on the Lions, catching 12 of 16 targets for 80 yards in his first two games. A remaining schedule of vs. LAR, @ ARI, @ BUF, and vs. MIN isn't particularly great, but he has plenty of upside this week. Regardless, he can always rack up receptions for those in PPR leagues.
