Phil Mickelson's path to becoming the oldest major champion in PGA Tour history was not an easy one.

Mickelson took home his sixth major championship title Sunday evening as he won the PGA Championship. While the drama was largely over by the final hole, Mickelson and his playing group found themselves being swarmed by spectators while walking to the 18th green at The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island.

Thousands of fans surrounded the green to watch Mickelson earn his first major victory since 2013.

The entourage following him was impressively large as well.

The most stunning visual was of Mickelson trying to fight through the crowd to get to his ball. He, his caddy and security personnel were engulfed by spectators and had to push past them to get to the green.

Mickelson eventually popped out, none the worse for wear. Then, he finished off his final-round 73 with two putts.

Scenes like those on Sunday are rare. Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, this type of crowding around a player was exceedingly uncommon.

Thankfully, Mickelson emerged unscathed and seemed to be a fan of the fans contributing to the electric atmosphere of his win.

"[The crowd was] slightly unnerving, but exceptionally awesome," he said.
