Phil Mickelson is the betting underdog in a team-golf match being played against two athletes who made their money in other sports.

It sounds weird until you remember that Mickelson is teaming up with Charles Barkley and his much-maligned golf swing. Peyton Manning and Stephen Curry oppose that duo in "Captial One's The Match: Champions for Change," which is otherwise known as The Match 3. It'll be played in Arizona at Stone Canyon Golf Club, which is partially owned by Mickelson, on Friday, Nov. 27. The teams will play a modified alternate shot format that will at least give Mickelson a chance of carrying Barkley on his shoulders to a victory.

Here's what you need to know about the hosting course for The Match 3, along with the rules and betting odds that could matter going into the event.

Where is The Match 3 being played?

  • Golf course: Stone Canyon Golf Club

Stone Canyon Golf Club is located in Oro Valley, Arizona, which is six miles north of Tucson. In 2019, Golfweek named Stone Canyon No. 31 on its list of Top 100 Residential Courses.

A group that includes Mickelson owns Stone Valley, which is likely part of the reason The Match 3 is being played there. Stone Canyon opened in 2000, and Michael Jordan played a round there soon after it opened. The club has more than 200 members, and anyone can join for the $20,000 membership fee.

The course was designed by Jay Morrish, who also designed Jack Nicklaus' golf courses. It isn't designed for spectators, which makes it a good fit for a fan-less, made-for-TV event.

The Match 3 rules & format

The competition will take place in a modified alternate shot format. Each hole will start with all four golfers teeing off, and then things get especially interesting.

The second shot for each will be with his partner's ball. So Mickelson will play from wherever Barkley's tee shot goes, Barkley where Mickelson's goes and the same for Curry and Manning. After the second shot, each team will decide where to play their third shot from based on the lie of the second shots.

The Match 3 odds

Odds via DraftKings Sportsbook as of Nov. 25.

The current favorites to win The Match 3 are Curry and Manning, at -175. That puts the Mickelson-Barkley pairing at +138. That means to win $100 betting on Manning and Curry, you'd have to bet $175, and you can bet $100 on Mickelson and Barkley to win $138.

DK Sportsbook also has a number of individual match props that focus on certain holes or events happening. The most entertaining are the prop bets for whether an individual player will hit a hole-in-one. The odds for each man to hit a hole-in-one are as follows: Mickelson +8000, Curry +12500, Manning +15000 and Barkley +15000.
