Thomas, who entered the final event of the 2018-19 season 10 under according to the new format, was off to a steady start Saturday. He was even par through his first five holes and is currently 12 under for the tournament.
The 10-time tour champion and 2017 FedExCup winner has carded a number of low rounds at the Georgia course. In 13 of his 14 career rounds at East Lake, Thomas has posted 70 or better to finish within the top 10 of the last three championship events.
His best was solo second in 2017.
Thomas will resume play with the rest of the field Sunday for the remainder of Round 3 and the start (and finish) of Round 4.
He will have to hold off a very tough field.
Rory McIlroy and Brooks Koepka are currently tied for second (11 under) while Xander Schauffele sits in solo fourth (10 under).
Chez Reavie jumped two places up the leaderboard and is tied with Paul Casey for fifth place (9 under).
Patrick Reed is in seventh (7 under) and Gary Woodland highlights a four-way tie for eighth place (5 under).
