A bone spur in Jake Arrieta's pitching elbow is threatening to shut the veteran down for the season.

The Phillies ace allowed five earned runs and seven hits in three innings against the Giants Sunday night, which contributed to a 9-6 loss.

“It hurts every day,” Arrieta said, via The Philadelphia Inquirer. “I just wasn’t able to get through my share of the outing and preserve the lead.”

When asked if he was going to keep pitching this season, Arrieta said he didn't know and would have to talk to the team about his situation Tuesday.

The 33-year-old's pitch count has been limited since July, which has minimalized his time on the mound. He has thrown more than 88 pitches only once in his last 10 starts, and departed after a season-low 66 Sunday.

Arrieta admitted he starts to struggle after five minnings and that there are times his elbow tenses up, especially after long breaks.

"There are going to be times where it’s smart to take me out, and there are also going to be times where it’s smart to continue to let me go, even though it’s not comfortable,” Arrieta said last week, via the Inquirer. “I’m OK with that."

While he has held opponents to two runs or fewer in four of his last six starts, Sunday's rough outing might prompt Arrieta to undergo elbow surgery sooner than later.
