Tim Tebow's minor league baseball season is ending early due to injury, Newsday reported Saturday.

The Syracuse Mets placed Tebow on the injured list with a "deep cut" on his left hand last month, but he won't be able to play again before the season is over. He initially suffered the injury while fielding a ball in the outfield July 21, and hasn't played since.

The report also notes that the Mets expect Tebow to return in 2020 for his fourth season.

Tebow, who was an NFL quarterback before switching to baseball in 2016, struggled in Triple-A this season. He was slashing .163/.240/.255 with four home runs and 19 RBIs in 77 games before the injury.

His 2018 Double-A season in Binghamton also was cut short when he broke a bone in his hand after playing 84 games.

Tebow, a college football standout who won the Heisman Trophy in 2007 with Florida, originally was selected by the Broncos in the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft. He spent two seasons in the league with Denver and one with the Jets before joining the Mets organization.

Tebow also works as a college football analyst with ESPN and the SEC Network during baseball's offseason.
