Florida's boneheaded shoe-throwing incident leads to LSU upset, wasted Playoff berth

No single player should take the blame for No. 6 Florida's shocking 37-34 upset loss to LSU.

But Gators fans will likely point to a single moment — a boneheaded unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in the last minutes — as the pivotal point in a loss that likely eliminated the team from College Football Playoff contention.

The inexplicable incident came on LSU's final offensive drive; the Gators defense had just come up with a huge third-down stop at LSU's 29 yard line that would have given Heisman front runner Kyle Trask roughly two minutes to lead a game-winning drive with the game tied at 34. But that silly penalty — one that saw defensive back Marco Wilson fling Kole Taylor's shoe after the play — netted LSU 15 free yards and a new set of downs:

Six plays later, LSU kicker Cade York drilled a 57-yard field goal through the fog to give the Tigers a 37-34 lead it would never relinquish. To the Gators' credit, Trask did lead Florida on an impressive drive to potentially tie the game with a 51-yard field goal. But Evan McPherson's attempt sailed wide left as the clock hit zero, leaving a heartbroken Florida team to wonder what might have been.

Again: Wilson shouldn't take the blame for this loss. At least, no more than McPherson for his missed field goal, or tight end Kyle Pitts for missing the game, or Trask for his three turnovers that resulted in 10 points for the Tigers. Of course, it would be foolish to blame any individual more than the other; that's because Florida's loss was a team loss.

So, there's no need for Florida fans to throw a fit about Wilson.

Or a ... well, you know.
