Matthew Stafford would have accepted a trade anywhere but to the Patriots, per report

The dream of "Matt the Pat" was dead before it even lived.

Matthew Stafford is heading to the Rams in a deal that isn't officially official until the new league year on March 17th, but one thing that we know for sure is that he's not going to the Patriots — and he never wanted to.

According to NBC Sports Boston's Tom Curran, Stafford would have welcomed a trade to all 30 teams except the Patriots.

While the Patriots are going to spend a second consecutive offseason looking for a quarterback with Cam Newton presumably not coming back, Stafford was pegged by some as a potential option at QB once the veteran hit the trade block earlier in January. Now it seems like the Patriots were never in the cards.

And who can blame Stafford? The soon-to-be 33-year-old is entering the Back 9 of his career and has a ring on his mind. That'll be a tall mountain to climb, considering the 13-year vet has yet to win a playoff game in his career, but with Sean McVay and a team ready to win now in LA, playoff wins could be more likely, though.

Conversely, the Patriots are entering, what appears to be, a full-blown rebuild after finishing 7-9 and in third place in the AFC East in 2020. The team is seemingly devoid in impact talent and isn't exactly a destination at the moment, Bill Belichick or not.

There's also the theory that Stafford wanted to be as far away from former Lions head coach Matt Patricia as possible. While that's rumor and conjecture, it's apparent that Patricia's presence in New England wasn't exactly a draw, either. Patricia and the Pats reunited this past offseason after Patricia's firing from Detroit during the 2020 season.

The blockbuster deal with the Rams nets Los Angeles Stafford, with two, first-round picks, a third-rounder and Jared Goff heading to the Motor City. The Patriots select No. 15 in the 2021 NFL Draft.
