There appears to be no love lost between Tom Brady Sr. and his son's former coach.

Speaking with NBC Sports Boston's Tom E. Curran, Brady Sr. said the Patriots wanted Tom Brady out of New England when his contract expired. Asked whether he felt any vindication about how his son has performed since leaving the Patriots, Brady Sr. responded, "Damn right."

"My feeling is that Tommy is extraordinarily appreciative of everything that happened during his New England career and he's more than happy that he's moved on because it was pretty obvious that the Patriot regime felt that it was time for him to move on," the elder Brady said. "And, frankly, it may well have been perfect for [Bill] Belichick to move on from him. On the other hand, I think the Tampa Bay Bucs are pretty happy that the decision was made in Foxborough that they didn't want to afford him or didn't want to keep him when his last contract came up."

When Brady's contract was up at the end of the 2019 season, he announced that he would not return to the Patriots, and just three days after it officially expired he inked a deal with the Buccaneers to be their new starting quarterback. Brady, of course, immediately found success, passing for 40 touchdowns during the regular season and posting his fourth straight season with at least 4,000 passing yards.

Tampa Bay went to the Super Bowl and beat the Chiefs for only the franchise's second title, while Brady collected his seventh individual ring. The Patriots went 7-9 and finished third in the AFC East in the team's worst season since Belichick's first year in New England in 2000, when the team went 5-11 and placed fifth.

"Belichick wanted him out the door, and last year he threw 56 touchdowns. I think that's a pretty good year," Brady Sr. said.

Brady Sr. will make the trip from his home in San Mateo, Calif., in Week 4 when Brady makes his first appearance at Gillette Stadium since he left.

Brady Sr. said that it will be a nostalgic trip back to the city that Brady called home for 20 years.

"The fans embraced Tommy and the city embraced Tommy and the team embraced Tommy for a while. And so when he comes home, it's going to be a real treat that he spent 20 years making his mark in Boston," Brady Sr. said. "We owe a lot to the Patriots and a lot to Boston. Like every phase in life, things move on. Our kids get older, our kids move on, they move out of the house, they go elsewhere and that's kinda what it's like for Tommy right now where he's moved elsewhere and wherever he is, we support our kids. Tommy's no different than the rest of us."

Don't expect to see Brady Sr. wearing any Patriots garb while he's there, however. He told NBC Sports that while he might have a license plate that says "Six Super Bowls," the rest of the Patriots paraphernalia was given away.
