Retired U.S. women's soccer star Abby Wambach told The Associated Press that her arrest in April for driving under the influence "was one of the best things that has ever happened to me."

In "Forward," a memoir to be released Tuesday, Wambach details her longtime dependency on alcohol and prescription drugs such as Vicodin, Ambien and Adderall.

"That night getting arrested was one of the best things that has ever happened to me. Because if I don't get so publicly shamed and publicly humiliated, I don't think I wake up," she said, in an interview with the AP. "I think I was asleep for a lot of years. Asleep to the pleas from my family and friends, and even myself, to get help. So that night I was humiliated enough to wake up.

"I was stubborn and I was in denial. I didn't want to face the truth."

Wambach pleaded guilty to the DUI charges and entered a treatment program for first-time offenders.

The all-time leading scorer in international soccer with 184 goals, Wambach retired in December.

Wambach told the AP she has been sober since that night she got the DUI.

"This isn't something that just snuck up on me when I retired from soccer," she said. "This is something I've been dealing with for years now."
