Winning the Women's World Cup has its perks.

Jill Ellis enjoyed a successful summer as coach of the U.S. Women's National Team, leading the star-studded soccer squad to its first title in 16 years. Now she'll enjoy the fruits of her labor, having agreed to a new contract and extension to stay on as USA's coach, a move first reported by The Washington Post.

The new contract wasn't a foregone conclusion, as it may seem. The U.S. Soccer Federation could have easily enacted options in Ellis's previous deal and extended her for up to five more years at what would have almost certainly been cheaper rates.

The number of years and dollars in Ellis's new contract remains unknown. But the display of faith comes only 15 months after the initial appointment of Ellis to the post. After she had twice served as an interim replacement, even her official rise to the helm came with a short contract, already expired.

Now, she's likely locked in for the foreseeable future.

Why? Probably because her players bought in. On the eve of the Women's World Cup Final, the Wall Street Journal chronicled the U.S. team's commitment to Ellis. Their words, as much as a win the following day, likely reflect the reasons U.S. Soccer would invest in Ellis.

"The intangible this year is our coaching staff focuses on the minor details that make all the differences," longtime soccer star Abby Wambach told WSJ.

And that quote is no minor detail. Wambach offered that compliment after she saw her playing time diminished in a run toward the title.

Wambach has played her last World Cup, but it appears Ellis has only coached her first — with many more to come.
